Sen. Ngwu Donates Security Equipment to Enugu Forest Guards

 

Senator Osita Ngwu, who represents Enugu West Senatorial District, has donated security equipment to the Enugu State Forest Guard to strengthen its operations in tackling insecurity across the state.

The items, presented on Friday at the Forest Guard Command Headquarters in Enugu, include body armour, bulletproof vests and helmets, long-range binoculars, communication radios, and first aid kits.

Ngwu said the gesture was aimed at improving field efficiency and enhancing the safety of operatives deployed in forest-based security operations.

He commended Governor Peter Mbah’s investments in security infrastructure, describing Enugu State as a leading example in security management.

“We have a governor who understands governance across all sectors. In security, the Command and Control Centre in Enugu is currently the best in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the sophistication of the system, in his view, surpasses what is available at the federal level, noting that it has strengthened coordinated responses to security threats.

The senator said his intervention was inspired by the state government’s commitment to security, adding that citizens and stakeholders must share responsibility in sustaining safety efforts.

He also urged residents to provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies, stressing the importance of public cooperation in crime prevention.

“There is a saying in security: if you see something, say something,” he said.

Ngwu further acknowledged that insecurity often rises during election periods but insisted that proactive governance and strong institutions remain essential in addressing emerging threats.

He noted that the state’s Security Trust Fund supports multiple security agencies, including the police, army, DSS, neighbourhood watch, and the Forest Guard.

Reacting, the Chairman of the Enugu State Forest Guard Board, Col. Daniel Chukwu (rtd.), described the donation as timely, saying the agency had undergone significant restructuring since its establishment.

He said the government had created an enabling environment for the outfit, with swift approval of proposals aimed at improving operations and welfare.

Chukwu added that initial batches of operatives had been trained in Osun State, with early results already encouraging.

Also speaking, the Commander of the Forest Guard, DCP Olasoji Akinbayo (rtd.), described the donation as a morale boost for personnel engaged in forest security operations.

He said the support would enhance ongoing efforts to secure forest corridors and combat criminal activity, adding that further collaboration from stakeholders would strengthen the agency’s effectiveness.

Akinbayo also disclosed that the state government had procured more than 1,000 rifles for the outfit to support its operations across Enugu State.
