AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Nigeria Drawn Against Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been drawn against Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau in Group L of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The draw ceremony was held Tuesday at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association in Cairo, with Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong participating as one of the draw assistants.
According to reports by punch, the qualifiers will feature 48 countries divided into 12 groups, with 24 teams expected to qualify for the tournament to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Nigeria, drawn from Pot One, received what analysts describe as a relatively favourable group. However, because Tanzania qualified automatically as one of the tournament hosts, only the top team in Group L will secure an automatic ticket to the competition.
The report noted that the same arrangement applies to other groups containing co-host nations, while the top two teams from the remaining groups will qualify for the finals.
Among other notable fixtures, defending champions Côte d’Ivoire were drawn alongside Ghana, The Gambia and Somalia in Group C, while 2025 AFCON winners Senegal will face Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in Group J.
The qualifying campaign will begin during the FIFA international window scheduled for September 21 to October 6, 2026, with the final round of matches billed for March 2027.
