Enugu CP Giwa Calls for Professional, Rights-Based Policing

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed all personnel under the Command to uphold professionalism, respect for human rights, firmness, and humane policing in the discharge of their duties across the state.

He gave the charge during an interactive town hall meeting with security stakeholders and citizens under the Oji-River Area Command, which covers Ezeagu, Oji-River, and Udi Local Government Areas of Enugu State.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner reiterated that officers on stop-and-search duties are not permitted to harass, intimidate, or search citizens’ mobile phones without clear investigative justification.

He also noted that disciplinary measures are being taken against erring officers, stressing that the Command remains committed to ensuring that all personnel operate within the ethical and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

The meeting, held at Wembley Hotel, Oji-River, brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders, community presidents-general, youth and women groups, transport and market union representatives, as well as members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oji-River Branch.

Also in attendance were representatives of other security agencies, Forest Guards, Neighbourhood Watch groups, and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), among other stakeholders.

Participants at the forum commended the Commissioner of Police for what they described as his proactive policing approach and commitment to community engagement through regular town hall meetings.

The Command further disclosed that similar engagements have already been held in Udenu and Nsukka Area Commands, with future sessions scheduled for Agbani Area Command and Enugu Metropolis.
