Obi Arrives NDC Headquarters for Screening
In the past few days, Obi—who is a presidential hopeful on the platform of the NDC—has been widely described as a potential frontrunner and possible consensus candidate of the party. However, both the party leadership and Obi’s camp have publicly denied any formal endorsement, even as speculation continues to grow following the party’s decision to suspend the sale of presidential nomination forms while extending sales for governorship, Senate and House of Representatives aspirants.
Obi reportedly drove into the party secretariat at about 6:45pm. He was dressed in his trademark black kaftan and matching cap, and arrived about 20 minutes after the chairman of the screening committee, Senator Sam Egwu, entered the venue. He was later seen submitting his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms through an aide shortly after arrival.
He was accompanied by the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh.
The development comes 24 hours after the NDC appointed a former Ebonyi State Governor and ex-lawmaker, Senator Sam Egwu, as chairman of its screening committee ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the 17-member committee is scheduled to be inaugurated at 4pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
The statement added that Senator Egwu will lead the panel responsible for screening presidential, governorship, senatorial and House of Representatives aspirants, while the party’s National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, will serve as secretary. Other members include Buba Galadima, Ikeddy Isiguzo, Wole Adedayo, Udenta Udenta, Henry Obaze, among other party leaders and professionals.
