‘We Raped Her Before Beheading’ — Suspect In Killing Of Imo Nursing Student Allegedly Confesses

Fresh details have emerged over the killing of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, identified as Wendy Achumba, following the arrest of a suspect linked to the crime. 

The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was reportedly arrested by youths of Umuadara, Umulogho community after investigations led by the youth leader, Chidiebere Iweajunwa. He was later handed over to the police for further investigation. 

According to reports, the deceased, who hailed from Ngwa in Abia State, had completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training at the College of Nursing, Umulogho. Her lifeless body was discovered inside her private off-campus apartment in Umuadara community, triggering outrage and tension within the area.

Community sources said the victim was living alone in the apartment after two other students residing in the building left for their nursing practical experience. The landlord of the property was also said to be based in the United States. 

In a viral video confession cited by Vanguard, the suspect alleged that he and another individual identified simply as Emmanuel went to the victim’s residence at about 7 p.m. He claimed the student rejected their sexual advances before they allegedly assaulted her. 

The suspect further alleged that after the assault, he struck the victim with a stick, while accusing the second suspect of later attacking her with a knife after she reportedly identified them. 

“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. We went to her house around 7 p.m. I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once. After that, I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” the suspect said in the video confession published by Vanguard. 

Earlier reports had indicated that neighbours became alarmed after repeated knocks on the victim’s door went unanswered. Residents reportedly forced the door open and discovered her mutilated body inside the apartment. 

The killing sparked tension in the community, with angry youths demanding justice and improved security around student hostels and residential areas. 

The spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing. He stated that police operatives visited the scene, evacuated the body to the morgue and commenced efforts to identify and arrest all those connected to the crime.

The police also appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm, assuring residents that those responsible would be brought to justice.
