Abia community laments crop losses after alleged cattle invasion

The Traditional Prime Minister of Ike Mgboko Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, Daniel Iheadindueme, has condemned the destruction of newly cultivated crops in parts of the community, allegedly by cattle belonging to Fulani herders.

Iheadindueme, who also serves as Commander of the Abia State Community Policing/Vigilante, said the affected areas include Mgboko Okpulor village, Mgboko Amairi village and the Nne Nkute axis.

He alleged that herders drove cattle into farmlands, intimidated farmers and allowed the animals to graze on newly germinated crops, leading to significant losses.

Describing the development as a threat to food security and the economic wellbeing of residents, the community leader warned that continued incidents could worsen hunger in rural areas.

He cautioned herders against trespassing on farmlands or engaging in acts capable of breaching public peace, stressing that violators would be apprehended and handed over to security agencies for prosecution.

Iheadindueme also called on leaders of the Hausa community in Abia State to sensitise their members on the need to comply with existing laws and local regulations.

While commending Governor Alex Otti for efforts to enhance security in the state, he urged farmers to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
