NSCDC Detains 3 Suspected Kidnappers, Rescues Victim in Enugu Forest

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has detained three suspected kidnappers and rescued a victim in Onuogba Nike Forest, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Disclosing the development in Enugu on Wednesday, the Commandant of the NSCDC Enugu State Command, Dr. Elijah Willie, said the rescue operation lasted over eight hours and ended at about 2:00 a.m. on June 1.

He explained that on May 31, Mr. Chukwu Daniel, a butcher, was allegedly lured into the Onuogba Nike forest by a cattle seller identified as Mr. Isuhu, popularly known as “Shua Shua,” under the guise of purchasing livestock.

According to him, after negotiations were concluded, the victim attempted to take the cattle away but was called back by the seller, who claimed he was no longer interested in selling.

“At that moment, the cattle moved deeper into the forest, and Daniel was allegedly ambushed, attacked and abducted,” he said.

He added that the victim was subsequently attacked by three armed men.

“The victim alleged that three armed men, carrying one AK-47 rifle, two pistols and machetes, emerged from the forest and attacked him,” Willie stated.

He further disclosed that the victim was abducted, sustained multiple machete cuts, and that a ransom demand was later made through his wife.

“The victim was consequently taken captive, given multiple machete cuts and a ransom demand made through contact with his wife,” he said.

Commandant Willie said the victim’s wife promptly alerted the NSCDC, prompting a swift response from operatives.

“The victim’s wife promptly alerted the NSCDC and a patrol team responded swiftly, leading to the successful tracking, rescue of Daniel and the detention of three suspects,” he said.

He added that the suspects are currently under investigation and assisting operatives with information that may lead to the arrest of other accomplices still at large.

He noted that the victim is recovering after being hospitalised for over a week at Colliery Hospital, Enugu, due to machete injuries sustained during the attack.

Willie urged members of the public to patronise only designated cattle markets and avoid forest-based transactions, warning that such locations expose people to criminal attacks.

He also called on residents to provide timely intelligence to security agencies, and warned criminal elements operating in the state to desist from their activities.

“Enugu State is no longer a safe haven for kidnappers, vandals and hoodlums,” he warned.

The Commandant also appreciated Governor Peter Mbah for his support to the Corps, as well as the cooperation of sister security agencies in the state.
