Bauchi governor declares himself ‘freelance politician’ after meeting Peter Obi

The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has said he no longer identifies strictly with any political party, describing himself as a “freelance politician”.

He made the remarks on Thursday while receiving Peter Obi, a senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), along with stakeholders from Nigeria’s south-east at the Government House in Bauchi.

Mr Mohammed said the meeting was aimed at promoting national unity and cooperation, rather than advancing partisan interests.

“Neither the PDP nor the ADC is standing alone. I consider myself a freelance politician now, and even his party is facing uncertainty. We are all awaiting judicial clarity,” he said.

He added that, while the discussions were political in nature, details would not be made public.

The governor said ongoing consultations among opposition figures were exploring possible alliances ahead of future elections, and described Mr Obi’s visit as a step towards strengthening ties across regions.

“He is advocating unity, bridge-building and a better future for Nigeria. These are values we share,” Mr Mohammed said.
