Updated: California teacher identified as suspect in Trump gala shooting

A 31-year-old man from California has been identified by law enforcement officials as the suspect arrested after gunfire disrupted the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC.

The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was detained inside the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was taking place. Authorities say he was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun and knives.

According to US media reports, Allen allegedly told investigators he intended to target members of the administration of Donald Trump. Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said early findings suggest the suspect may have been aiming at senior officials, “likely” including the president, though the motive remains under investigation.

Police said the suspect attempted to breach security but was quickly intercepted before gaining full access to the venue. Officers exchanged fire with him, though he was not hit. He was later taken to hospital for evaluation.

Investigators believe Allen may have assembled the weapon inside the hotel and that he travelled across the country prior to the incident. Authorities are also examining his background, including limited political activity and online presence.

Washington’s interim police chief, Jeffery Carroll, described the suspect as a “lone actor”, adding that there is currently no indication of wider involvement.

Allen is expected to face federal charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer. Prosecutors say he will appear in court as the investigation continues.

The shooting caused panic inside the venue, where political leaders, journalists and celebrities had gathered for one of Washington’s most prominent annual events.
