Golders Green Stabbings: Suspect Linked to Prevent Programme

The suspect in the Golders Green stabbings had previously been referred to the UK government’s counter-extremism Prevent programme, the BBC understands.

Two Jewish men – 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Shine – were attacked in north London on Wednesday, in an incident police are treating as terrorism-related.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Rand’s mother said she was “pretty horrified that these things could happen on the streets of London”.

The suspect, a 45-year-old British national who arrived in the UK as a child from Somalia, has been arrested. Authorities have released further details about his background, alongside bodycam footage capturing the moment of his arrest.

BBC Verify has reconstructed a timeline of events, including a mapped route believed to have been taken by the attacker.

Earlier, the UK’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, Jonathan Hall KC, described attacks targeting Jewish communities as “the biggest national security emergency” in nearly a decade.

In response, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced £25 million in funding to strengthen security at synagogues, schools and community centres.
