The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally announced former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary.
The announcement came after what the party described as a transparent and closely monitored electoral process conducted in line with its constitution and internal guidelines.
According to the NDC, the primary election witnessed strong participation from delegates across the country, reflecting what it called growing confidence in the party’s democratic processes and renewed commitment to internal party democracy.
At the end of the exercise, Obi emerged victorious with a clear majority of votes cast, securing the party’s ticket ahead of other aspirants in the contest.
In his acceptance speech, Obi thanked delegates and party members for the confidence reposed in him, describing the outcome as a call to greater responsibility, unity and service.
He said: “With this mandate, I accept the responsibility to lead our party into the 2027 elections. We must now unite, strengthen our structures, and work together for national progress.”
The former governor pledged to lead an inclusive, issue-based campaign focused on economic recovery, good governance, national unity and sustainable development.
He assured party members that his campaign would prioritise policies aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, improving governance, creating opportunities for young people and strengthening public institutions.
The NDC leadership congratulated Obi on his emergence and urged party members, supporters and stakeholders across the country to rally behind the candidate as preparations begin for the 2027 general election.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to providing what it described as a credible alternative platform for Nigerians and pledged to continue strengthening its structures ahead of the polls.
The announcement marks a significant milestone in the party’s preparations for the 2027 presidential race, with attention now expected to shift to coalition-building, policy engagement and nationwide mobilisation.
