King Charles Tells US Congress UK–US Alliance ‘More Important Than Ever’

 

King Charles III has told the United States Congress that the partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States is “more important than ever”, warning that the challenges facing both nations are “too great for any one nation to bear alone”.

In an address marked by frequent applause and standing ovations, the King emphasised long-standing ties between both countries and expressed Britain’s “highest regard and friendship” for the United States. He also referenced his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who addressed the same chamber in 1991.

Lawmakers repeatedly rose to their feet during the speech, which combined historical reflection with British humour and references to shared global responsibilities, while also looking ahead to emerging international challenges.

The King concluded his address by stating that “America’s words carry weight and meaning”, a remark that prompted mixed reactions in the chamber, with some members expressing agreement while others voiced concern, according to correspondents.

Earlier in the visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla were received at the White House by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The monarch and President later held talks in the Oval Office following a formal welcome ceremony.

The visit featured full ceremonial honours, with images showing the two leaders smiling and exchanging handshakes during the White House reception.
