University Staff Union Sets April 30 Strike Deadline For FG

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned it will embark on industrial action from April 30 if the Federal Government fails to conclude ongoing negotiations on staff welfare and entitlements.

The union said the ultimatum followed protracted discussions dating back to 2022, which remain unresolved despite the government’s recent approval of a 30 per cent salary increase for non-academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

Speaking at a meeting held at the Federal University of Technology Akure, SSANU branch chairman, Felix Adumbi, described the salary adjustment circular as premature, noting that it did not emanate from any concluded agreement.

He stressed that the union’s April 1–30 ultimatum, issued during its 54th National Executive Council meeting at Ekiti State University, remains binding.

“We have been on this renegotiation for years. What is required now is for the government to urgently conclude the process and produce a mutually agreed framework,” Adumbi said.

He further criticised the circular, stating that negotiations were still ongoing at the time it was released and that the union had rejected it in its entirety.

SSANU warned that failure by the government to finalise the renegotiation before the deadline could trigger a nationwide strike, as the union may seek further directives from its national leadership.
