2027: Group warns against intimidation of young aspirants

A youth advocacy group, Nigerian Youths in Politics, has raised concerns over what it described as increasing intimidation of young political aspirants across various political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chairman of the group, Mr Felix Tolorunju, spoke at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, where he warned political actors against actions capable of discouraging young Nigerians from participating in governance and the democratic process.

Mr Tolorunju alleged that several young aspirants who had purchased nomination forms to contest elective offices were facing undue pressure and intimidation after declaring interest in state-level political positions.

According to him, some governors and influential political leaders were allegedly using their positions to suppress emerging voices within their parties.

“The continued harassment of young aspirants amounts to an attack on the future of leadership in Nigeria and a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of youths to participate freely in the democratic process,” he said.

The group called on governors, political parties, and other stakeholders to guarantee equal opportunities for all aspirants, irrespective of age or political affiliation.

Mr Tolorunju warned that the organisation could mobilise Nigerian youths for peaceful nationwide protests if the alleged intimidation and suppression of young politicians continued.

He also appealed to the media and Civil Society Organisations to hold political leaders accountable to democratic principles of fairness, inclusion, and political participation.

According to him, allowing such intimidation to persist would undermine the country’s democratic system and weaken youth confidence in governance.

Mr Tolorunju further urged young Nigerians to remain resolute in defending their constitutional right to contest elections and contribute meaningfully to national development.
