2027: Kwankwaso breaks silence on ADC future, confirms talks with other parties

Former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said he remains a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), despite growing speculation about his political future, but acknowledged that a possible defection remains under consideration.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Mr Kwankwaso said no final decision had been taken regarding his next political move, amid ongoing internal challenges within the party. 

He confirmed that he has begun consultations with leaders of other political platforms, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), as part of efforts to determine the most viable path forward. 

The former governor of Kano State linked the uncertainty to legal disputes within the ADC, noting that a recent Supreme Court ruling affirmed the legitimacy of a National Working Committee led by David Mark, while returning aspects of the case to the High Court. He said the development has left the party in what he described as a “precarious position”. 

He added that a separate Federal High Court ruling had questioned the validity of the party’s convention, while an application by the Attorney General of the Federation seeking the party’s deregistration has further deepened uncertainty. 

Mr Kwankwaso also drew parallels with his earlier exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which he said was influenced by similar legal challenges.

On the 2027 presidential election, he said he has neither declared his intention to run nor endorsed any candidate, stressing that the ADC has yet to decide on zoning or its flagbearer. 

“All speculations regarding my candidacy or support for any aspirant are premature and unfounded,” he said.

Mr Kwankwaso also explained that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to personal commitments, adding that he had duly informed the party leadership.

He said consultations would continue, noting that any decision on his political direction would be communicated through official channels.
