Ogun Teacher Confesses To Murder Of WASSCE Candidate

A 30-year-old private school teacher, Nathaniel Baiyegun, has been arrested in Ogun State over the alleged murder of a 16-year-old West African Senior School Certificate Examination candidate, Florence, in a case that has shocked residents and education stakeholders.

According to police sources, the suspect allegedly lured the victim under the guise of attending a coaching class before abducting her and killing her in an uncompleted building. He is also accused of demanding a ransom of 500,000 naira from the victim’s father after the killing, money which he allegedly spent on online sports betting.

The source further revealed that Baiyegun claimed the victim was a former student and that he reconnected with her after she left school. He allegedly admitted to keeping her in an uncompleted building and administering an overdose of sleeping tablets before abandoning her. Investigators also suspect involvement in internet-related crimes, including alleged solicitation of explicit images from the deceased.

In his confessional statement, the suspect said he later dumped the victim’s body in a river in Ogijo after believing she had died. He also admitted receiving part of the ransom from the victim’s father and claimed he did not inform him of her death at the time of payment, adding that he “spent almost all the money on online sports betting and regrets it.”

Reacting to the development, the Ogun State Police Command said the arrest followed a successful operation by its Anti-Kidnapping Unit. The Command described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and urged residents to be cautious about personal relationships and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
