Peter Obi Quits ADC

Peter Obi has announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what he described as an increasingly “toxic” political environment within the party and the wider Nigerian political space.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Obi said his decision was driven by growing internal divisions, legal disputes and what he characterised as external interference in party affairs. He added that these challenges had created a climate marked by hostility, intimidation and heightened scrutiny.

Obi said his exit was not the result of personal disagreements with key figures in the party, including David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he continues to respect.

Instead, he pointed to what he described as a pattern of instability within the ADC, drawing parallels with difficulties he previously encountered in the Labour Party.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised broader trends in Nigeria’s political landscape, saying values such as integrity, humility and due process are often seen as weaknesses. He warned that efforts aimed at public service and national development are increasingly undermined by suspicion and political manoeuvring.

Despite leaving the party, Obi said he remains committed to addressing key national challenges, including insecurity, poverty and displacement. He added that his political engagement is driven not by personal ambition, but by a desire to promote a more just and functional society.
