Six-year-old dies after falling from apartment building

A six-year-old Nigerian girl has died after falling from a high-rise apartment building in Toronto, Canada, in an incident that has shocked residents in the community.

Police said officers responded to reports of an emergency at an apartment complex on Chalkfarm Drive in the North York area at about 20:15 local time on Thursday.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the child was found unresponsive on the ground outside the building after officers arrived at the scene.

Residents described the girl as cheerful and well known within the neighbourhood, saying her death had deeply affected the community.

“She used to come here all the time and play… she was a lively kid. It’s very, very sad,” one resident told local broadcaster CP24.

Another resident said the child was often seen during school runs and daily activities around the building.

“It’s crazy that I will never see this child again. I see her every morning. It’s heartbreaking,” the resident said.

Reports said the girl’s mother was in Nigeria at the time of the incident, while the child had reportedly been staying with a family friend living on the top floor of the building.

Some residents questioned how the incident happened, noting that the apartment windows were fitted with safety restrictors designed to prevent them from opening fully.

“To be fair, they do have precautions on these windows to make sure these things don’t happen,” one resident said.

The property management company, Greenwin, described the incident as “deeply saddening” and said it was cooperating fully with investigators.

The company declined to comment on the inspection history or condition of the windows because of the ongoing investigation.

Toronto police said the death is not currently being treated as suspicious, although investigations are continuing pending autopsy results.
