Troops foil alleged IPOB/ESN attack in Enugu, recover explosives

Troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led operation in Imezi Owa.

The operation, conducted in collaboration with other security agencies on 6 May in Ezeagu Local Government Area, was said to be part of ongoing efforts to track suspected terrorist collaborators operating within the community.

According to the Nigerian Army, troops came under attack while advancing on foot towards the area during the patrol mission.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, three soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.

The army, however, said troops maintained control of the operation, repelled the attack and secured the area.

“While troops were advancing on foot to the community, they were attacked from a building, resulting in injuries to three personnel,” the statement said.

“Despite the attack, troops maintained operational dominance, foiled the attack and secured the general area, while the injured personnel were promptly evacuated.”

The injured personnel are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility, according to the statement.

The army further disclosed that improvised explosive devices allegedly stored inside the building used by the suspects detonated during the gun battle, triggering a fire which destroyed the structure.

It added that subsequent searches conducted around the area led to the recovery of additional improvised explosive devices, locally made hand grenades and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities.

According to the military, the shrine was later destroyed to prevent its continued use for criminal purposes.

“Subsequent searches around the general area uncovered more IEDs, improvised hand grenades and shrine used for ritual activities,” the statement added.

“The shrine was thoroughly combed and destroyed to prevent continued usage for criminal activities and to safeguard community members.”

The military also said one suspected collaborator was arrested during the operation and handed over, alongside recovered items, to the Nigerian Police at the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

The Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, reassured residents that ongoing security operations in the region were being carried out professionally and with a commitment to protecting lives and property.

It urged residents of Imezi Owa and neighbouring communities to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and avoid harbouring criminal elements.

The task force also warned members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN and their supporters to desist from unlawful activities or face prosecution.

“Security forces remain resolute in their determination to build peace in the region and will continue to dismantle criminal networks and deny terrorists freedom of action,” the statement said.
