Awka Transport Study Targets Rail, Ferry, Air and Tram Development Under AfDB Plan

Issues of integrated transport development, including rail, ferry, air, and urban tram systems, have taken centre stage in Anambra State under an African Development Bank (AfDB)-supported Awka City Diagnostic Study aimed at transforming mobility and urban infrastructure.

The study, being carried out in collaboration with international consultants from Acciona Engineering of Spain, forms part of the AfDB City Action Plan designed to identify priority development interventions for Awka and other parts of the state. It focuses on key sectors including transportation, housing, land use, environment, power, tourism, and waste management.

Speaking during a technical engagement in Awka, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo, said the exercise is aimed at identifying critical infrastructure gaps and designing high-impact projects that will support sustainable urban growth and economic development in the state capital.

Team Leader and Urban Planner, Elisa Mussolettini, noted that transport remains a key driver of urban development, adding that the study will help address mobility challenges, attract investment, and strengthen an integrated transport system linking road, rail, air, and waterways.
