The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central Constituency, Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has called for urgent national and institutional intervention following severe flooding that has displaced more than 1,500 households across Samreboi and surrounding communities in the Wassa area of Ghana’s Western Region.

The flooding, triggered by persistent and heavy rainfall, has affected parts of Amenfi West, Amenfi Central, and Amenfi East districts. The disaster has destroyed homes, damaged businesses, and disrupted critical infrastructure, leaving several communities cut off as major roads become impassable.

Many affected residents are currently taking refuge in the open, with limited access to food, shelter, and healthcare. Local authorities report that economic activities in the affected areas have also been severely disrupted, deepening the humanitarian concerns as recovery efforts continue.

Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe expressed deep concern over the scale of the disaster and called for immediate coordinated support from government agencies, corporate bodies, and individuals to address the worsening situation. 

She specifically appealed to the Government of Ghana, including President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as well as relevant ministries and emergency response institutions, to swiftly deploy relief materials and rehabilitation support to the affected communities.

“The situation requires urgent attention. This is not just Samreboi’s problem; it is a national concern,” Hon. Gyan Cudjoe said, stressing the need for food supplies, medical assistance, temporary shelter, and urgent reconstruction of damaged roads to restore access to isolated communities.

She also commended the Managing Director of Samartex Timber and Plywood Company, Dr. Richard Kweku Duah Nsenkyire, for what she described as timely humanitarian support and leadership, noting that his intervention has provided relief and hope to some of the affected families.

Emergency response teams and local authorities are continuing assessments in the flood-hit areas, as relief coordination efforts intensify to prevent further hardship and contain the humanitarian impact of the disaster.
