Community Partnership Critical to Security, DIG Onwuemelie Tells Awka Monarch
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has underscored the importance of community partnership in addressing security challenges, particularly in the South-East region.
Onwuemelie stated this during a courtesy visit to the traditional ruler of Awka, the Ezeuzu II of Awka, Igwe Obi Gibson Nwosu, at his palace in Awka.
The DIG, who was accompanied by senior officers of the Anambra State Police Command, said the visit formed part of his operational tour of police formations across the South-East on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu.
He explained that, as an indigene of Awka, he considered it necessary to pay homage to the traditional institution while also seeking greater collaboration between communities and security agencies.
According to him, he had earlier met with senior officers of the command on prevailing security concerns and the need to strengthen intelligence gathering through community participation.
“I am on an operational visit to police formations across the South-East region on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Rilwan Disu.
“I found it necessary to pay homage to the throne of my community. I have also met with senior police officers of the command on security issues and the need for community partnership in tackling security challenges in the South-East,” he said.
Earlier, the Ezeuzu II of Awka, Obi Nwosu, who spoke through the traditional Prime Minister of Awka, Chief Benjamin Okoye, commended the DIG for the visit and described him as a thoroughbred police officer and worthy ambassador of the community.
The monarch noted that the visit reflected respect for the traditional institution and assured the police of the community’s readiness to collaborate on security matters.
“We appreciate DIG Onwuemelie for being a thoroughbred officer and a proud son of Awka.
“He found it necessary to pay homage to the traditional stool of Awka and, with the wealth of experience of the traditional ruler, the community is always willing to partner with the police on security matters,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, and the President-General of Awka Development Union Nigeria (ADUN), Chief Fred Chinwuba, commended the DIG for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to improving security in the South-East.
They urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information capable of preventing crime and maintaining peace in their communities.
In separate remarks, Awka stakeholder, Chief Jonathan Nzekwe, and the Youth Leader of Awka, Chief Philip Ezenwa, described Onwuemelie as a diligent and professional officer who had continued to uphold the legacy of service associated with his family.
They prayed for his continued success and elevation in the Nigeria Police Force.
