Anambra Flags Off ‘Operation Show Your Building Permit’
The Anambra State Government has launched “Operation Show Your Building Permit” as part of efforts to enforce compliance with physical planning regulations and curb illegal building developments across the state.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Chijioke Ojukwu, announced the exercise while leading officials of the ministry on an enforcement tour of Ogbunike Wood Market, Ogidi Building Materials Market, parts of Nnewi and Oye-Agu Market, Abagana.
Ojukwu directed developers and property owners in major cities across the state to present evidence of approved building permits to the ministry for verification, warning that structures erected without approval would face sanctions, including demolition.
During the inspection, the commissioner observed that lock-up shops constructed by the Njikoka Local Government Area at Oye-Agu Market did not comply with the state’s physical planning laws.
He said the structures failed to provide adequate parking spaces as required by planning regulations and would be removed.
“Only licensed professionals in the building industry will henceforth be allowed to handle building development projects in Anambra State.
“We advise developers to engage qualified and licensed professionals and acquaint themselves with the provisions of the state’s physical planning laws to avoid sanctions or demolition of their projects upon completion,” he said.
Ojukwu reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing planning regulations, stressing that no individual, group or government agency would be exempt from compliance.
“The government will not hesitate to demolish any structure that contravenes physical planning laws, whether such structures are owned by private individuals, organisations or government institutions,” he stated.
The commissioner said the enforcement exercise was aimed at promoting orderly urban development, environmental sustainability and public safety across the state.
Officials of the ministry also marked several shanties and illegal structures in the areas visited and directed owners of some buildings to present evidence of approval within two weeks or risk demolition.
The state government urged residents, developers and investors to comply with established planning regulations to support sustainable development and prevent avoidable losses arising from enforcement actions.
