The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the sustained strengthening of security operations across Enugu State, with emphasis on visibility policing, proactive intelligence gathering, and enhanced protection of public spaces, especially schools.
Giwa gave the directive during a strategic conference with senior officers held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu.
He commended officers for what he described as their continued commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the state, urging them to consolidate existing gains.
He further directed the intensification of both overt and covert operations, particularly around schools and vulnerable public facilities.
He ordered the full deployment of the Command’s School Protection Squad (SPS) to ensure improved security for educational institutions, warning that emerging threats must be swiftly addressed.
The Police Commissioner also briefed officers on resolutions from the recent Strategic Senior Police Officers’ Conference convened by the Inspector-General of Police, including enforcement against unregistered vehicles and concealed number plates, strengthened inter-command cooperation through the “Handshake Patrol” initiative, and strict adherence to professional standards and human rights in policing.
According to him, “policing must remain professional, intelligence-driven, and respectful of citizens’ rights,” while stressing compliance with national directives aimed at improving operational effectiveness.
The conference featured presentations from officers who participated in trainings on artificial intelligence, human rights, arrest procedures, case management, and the legal implications of police actions.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of the late former Commissioner of Police and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Umuahia, AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of various tactical and administrative units of the Command.
