DIG Engages Enugu Stakeholders on Security
Security, community policing and stronger collaboration among security agencies and local stakeholders took centre stage in Enugu State as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Logistics and Supply, and Coordinating DIG for the South-East, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, concluded a strategic security assessment and stakeholder engagement in the state.
The engagement, held at the Senior Police Officers' Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu, brought together heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, transport and market union representatives, youth and student leaders, as well as members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC).
Speaking during the meeting, DIG Onwuemelie said the exercise was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, requiring Deputy Inspectors-General of Police to engage stakeholders across their respective geopolitical zones to strengthen security partnerships, deepen public trust and promote safer communities.
According to him, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to advance the policing vision and mission of the Nigeria Police Force through improved collaboration with citizens and institutions at the grassroots level.
The DIG briefed participants on reforms being implemented by the police leadership to reposition the Force for greater professionalism, effectiveness and service delivery. He also listened to concerns and observations raised by stakeholders on security challenges and policing issues affecting communities across the state.
Participants used the forum to discuss ways of improving intelligence gathering, strengthening cooperation between communities and security agencies, and enhancing public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
As part of the visit, DIG Onwuemelie also held an interactive session with officers and men of the Enugu State Police Command, where he urged personnel to remain committed to professionalism, discipline and dedication to duty.
He encouraged officers to align themselves with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police and continue to uphold the highest standards of conduct in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The officers, in turn, raised concerns relating to welfare and other service matters, which were addressed during the engagement.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, highlighted operational successes recorded by the Command since he assumed office on March 11, 2026.
Giwa said the Command had sustained proactive policing strategies aimed at improving security across the state while also strengthening internal discipline and professionalism among personnel.
He noted that the Command had intensified capacity-building programmes covering operational procedures, administration, human rights, social intelligence and emotional intelligence to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.
The DIG concluded the visit with a courtesy call on the Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, as part of efforts to reinforce collaboration between the police and the state government in addressing security challenges.
