Enugu Govt Restricts Movement Ahead of Enugu North Bye-Election

The Enugu State Government has announced restriction of human and vehicular movement in the Enugu North Senatorial District during Saturday's bye-election.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Friday.

Onyia said the restriction would take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on June 20 across the six local government areas and 102 electoral wards that make up the senatorial district.

He said the measure was aimed at ensuring the peaceful, orderly and credible conduct of the election.

According to him, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel, accredited election observers, media practitioners and other persons duly authorised for election duties are exempted from the restriction.

The SSG urged residents and eligible voters in the district to conduct themselves peacefully and exercise their civic responsibility in line with electoral guidelines.

He also called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to remain law-abiding before, during and after the election.

Onyia said security agencies had been directed to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

“The government appreciates the cooperation and understanding of all and wishes the people and residents of Enugu North Senatorial District a peaceful and successful election,” he said.

The Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election is being conducted to fill the vacant Senate seat following the death of Senator Okey Ezea.
