Gunmen Ambush Police Team in Anambra, Kill Two Officers
Two police officers have been killed after gunmen ambushed a police team along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack occurred on Sunday night as the officers were reportedly returning from an official assignment.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were allegedly hiding in nearby bushes, opened fire on the officers as their vehicle approached, triggering panic among residents and road users in surrounding communities.
A tricycle operator who witnessed the aftermath of the incident said he was travelling from Ezira when he heard gunshots and immediately retreated to safety. According to him, after the shooting subsided, he returned to the scene and discovered that two police officers had been killed.
A video circulating on social media showed the bodies of the officers lying beside a police patrol vehicle, while voices in the background called on authorities to respond to the incident.
Confirming the attack on Monday, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said the officers were ambushed while returning from an assignment and that two personnel lost their lives during the attack.
The police commissioner stated that the command had commenced investigations immediately after the incident and had intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Orutugu added that he would personally visit the scene to assess the situation and coordinate further security measures aimed at preventing similar attacks across the state.
He also advised motorists and residents to exercise caution around suspicious checkpoints, particularly those not manned by clearly identifiable police personnel or official police vehicles.
The commissioner urged members of the public to report such locations to the nearest police formation or contact security agencies for assistance.
The attack is the latest in a series of security incidents recorded in parts of Anambra State.
