Iran has fired multiple waves of missiles towards northern Israel in what it says is a coordinated response to recent Israeli military action in the region.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the operation targeted “the heart of the northern cities” in Israel. In a statement, the group warned that the strikes marked “the beginning of a full week of continuous strikes,” adding that “waves of missiles and drones will continue to be launched around the clock for the next seven days until the enemy is deterred and ceases its crimes.”
Israeli military officials said sirens were activated in several areas as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it was intercepting incoming missiles. The air force later said it had successfully intercepted “all the missiles launched from Iran so far,” although it added that additional launches were still being detected.
The escalation follows earlier Israeli air strikes on Beirut, which targeted what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as “terrorist headquarters” in the Dahieh district, a stronghold of Hezbollah. Lebanese authorities reported at least two deaths and multiple injuries, including women and children. Hezbollah later confirmed it had fired at Israeli military positions in response.
In Washington, the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the developments. A Fox News correspondent quoted the President as urging Iran to return to negotiations, saying: “You’ve shot your missiles. That’s enough. Get back to the table and make a deal.”
Iranian officials, however, defended their actions. IRGC commanders said the strikes served as a “warning” and warned that any further attacks on Iranian territory would be met with a “devastating and overwhelming response beyond all expectation.”
The situation has intensified diplomatic and military tensions across the region, with both sides warning of further escalation. Israeli officials said their defence systems remain on high alert, while Iranian statements suggest additional waves of attacks may continue over the coming days.
