Obi Consults U.S. Health Experts, Pledges Expanded Health Insurance for Nigerians

Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system through expanded health insurance coverage, improved primary healthcare services and increased investment in healthcare personnel.

Obi disclosed this following a meeting with healthcare professionals and experts in the United States, describing the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to understudy successful healthcare models and identify practical solutions for improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

According to him, discussions centred on the role of effective health insurance systems in expanding access to quality healthcare, particularly at the primary and emergency care levels, which remain critical to improving public health outcomes.

The former Governor of Anambra State noted that a healthy population is fundamental to national productivity and economic growth, stressing that an NDC-led administration would prioritise reforms aimed at making healthcare accessible, affordable and efficient for all Nigerians.

Obi said key priorities of his proposed healthcare agenda include expanding health insurance coverage, strengthening primary healthcare centres across the country’s electoral wards, training and retaining more healthcare workers, and ensuring equitable access to quality medical services regardless of citizens’ income levels.

He maintained that building a resilient healthcare system remains essential to achieving sustainable development, adding that investments in health should be viewed as investments in national prosperity.

“A healthier population is the foundation of a productive nation. We must build a healthcare system that works for everyone, regardless of social or economic status,” Obi stated.
