Police in Anambra React to Viral Military Helicopter Alert

The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral social media report alleging that a military helicopter dropped unidentified objects in a bush between Nimo and Adazi-Nnukwu communities in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the report triggered immediate security action, with police operatives deployed to the area to verify the claims and assess any potential threat to public safety.

According to Ikenga, a thorough on-the-spot assessment and preliminary investigations revealed that the area remained calm and peaceful, with no suspicious objects, security breaches or unusual activities discovered. He added that residents were going about their normal activities while security personnel maintained routine surveillance in the area.

The police spokesperson described the report as a false security alert capable of creating unnecessary fear among residents and urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified information on social media.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, called on residents to disregard the alarm and remain law-abiding, stressing that there was no security threat in the affected communities.

The Commissioner warned that the spread of unconfirmed reports could undermine public confidence in security agencies and create avoidable panic within communities.

CP Orutugu reiterated the command's commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations and close collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders to sustain peace and security across Anambra State. The command, he said, remains vigilant and prepared to respond promptly to any credible security concern.

He further advised residents to verify security-related information through official channels and to report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or recognised security agency.

The clarification comes amid increasing concerns over the spread of misinformation on digital platforms, a trend security experts warn could fuel anxiety and disrupt public order if left unchecked.

The Anambra State Police Command assured residents that ongoing security operations across the state remain effective and that there was no cause for alarm regarding the viral helicopter report.
