Police React To Alleged UNN Attack Report, Launch Probe

The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a social media report alleging a planned infiltration, kidnapping and attack on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its surrounding communities.

The Command said the report was deliberately designed to create fear and panic among students, staff and residents of the university community.

In a statement issued on Monday in Enugu, the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said intelligence and threat assessments conducted by the Command found no credible information indicating any planned attack or security threat targeting the institution.

According to him, security agencies, working in collaboration with the university authorities, have already put in place adequate security measures within and around the campus and will continue to strengthen them where necessary.

“The Enugu State Police Command has become aware of a social media report alleging a planned infiltration, kidnapping and attack on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its environs.

“The Command categorically states that the report is false, misleading, and deliberately intended to incite fear and panic within the university community and surrounding areas,” the statement said.

The Command further noted that those behind the report are part of a criminal syndicate that has repeatedly circulated similar alarmist claims under the guise of “Anonymous” and other social media identities.

It said the group had over the years engaged in the dissemination of false security alerts aimed at causing public panic and undermining peace and security in the state.

“The Command recalls that the perpetrators of the false report, a criminal syndicate operating under the guise of ‘Anonymous’ and other social media aliases, have repeatedly circulated similar alarmist claims over the years to incite fear, cause public panic, and undermine peace and security in the State.

“However, intelligence-led investigations are ongoing to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for spreading the false information and their collaborators,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reassured the management, staff, students and residents of the university community that adequate security arrangements remain in place.

The police commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to preventing crime and responding decisively to any threat to public safety across the state.

“CP Giwa urges members of the public to disregard the false report and desist from sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic, as such actions may attract legal sanctions.

“He further enjoins citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police station or through other established security channels,” the statement added.

The Command urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official security agencies and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports capable of causing public anxiety.
