WHEN LEADERSHIP MEETS COMMITMENT: THE TRANSFORMATION OF KAYERESO CLINIC

In politics, promises are often greeted with skepticism. Many citizens have heard grand assurances during election campaigns only to watch them disappear once the ballots are counted. That is why the story of Kayereso is one that deserves attention not merely because a promise was made, but because it is being fulfilled.

Ahead of the 2024 General Election, one of the major concerns of the people of Kayereso was the deplorable condition of their clinic. The facility serves as an important referral centre for several communities along the Katanga road stretch and plays a critical role in meeting the healthcare needs of residents.

Recognising the importance of quality healthcare infrastructure, the Member of Parliament who doubles as the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), *Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah*, pledged to rehabilitate the clinic if reelected.

While some residents believed in her vision, many others viewed the promise as just another political campaign message. Their doubts were reflected in the election results at the Kayereso polling station. Out of the 468 valid votes cast, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate, the late Hon. Uncle Sally, secured 298 votes, while Hon. Hajia Zuwera obtained 148 votes.

However, leadership is often measured not by words spoken during campaigns but by actions taken after victory. Following her electoral victory as Member of Parliament, Hon. Hajia Zuwera has demonstrated that public service transcends political considerations. Rather than showing any sign of resentment toward a community that did not overwhelmingly support her candidature, she has chosen the path of inclusive leadership and development.

Today, the renovation of the Kayereso Clinic is approximately 90% complete, bringing renewed hope to residents and improving access to quality healthcare services. Beyond the clinic project, the Member of Parliament has also facilitated the construction of a telephony tower to address the longstanding network challenges faced by communities within the area.

This achievement deserves commendation. The MP’s  approach to leadership sends a powerful message that elected leaders must serve all constituents, regardless of political affiliation or voting patterns. By prioritising the welfare, dignity, and well-being of the people of Kayereso, she has demonstrated a leadership style anchored in responsibility, inclusiveness, and a genuine commitment to development.
