World Drug Day: NDLEA takes anti-drug campaign to Nsukka streets

NSUKKA– The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday organised a walk against drug abuse in Nsukka, Enugu State, as part of activities marking the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the impact of illicit drug trafficking on individuals and communities.

The awareness rally saw NDLEA personnel, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), school children and other stakeholders march through major streets of Nsukka carrying placards bearing anti-drug abuse messages.

Speaking during the exercise, the Deputy Commander of NDLEA in charge of Drug Demand Reduction in Enugu State, Mr. Owunwa Ibezimako, said the campaign was designed to sensitise the public to the dangers associated with substance abuse and the need for collective action in addressing the challenge.

He said the agency would continue to prioritise advocacy, community engagement, rehabilitation and enforcement in its efforts to curb drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

“The exercise is aimed at sensitising the public to the dangers of substance abuse and the need for collective action in combating drug-related problems.

“The agency remains committed to drug demand reduction, public enlightenment, rehabilitation and law enforcement as part of efforts to address the challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking,” he said.

Ibezimako urged members of the public to support the fight against drug abuse by reporting drug-related activities and guiding young people away from substance use.

“The rally ended peacefully and achieved its objective of raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

“It attracted deputy commanders, heads of paramilitary organisations, senior officers and personnel of the NDLEA Enugu State Command, members of the National Youth Service Corps, school children and other stakeholders committed to promoting a drug-free society,” he added.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, commended the NDLEA for its sustained efforts in tackling drug abuse and promoting public awareness.

Represented by the Palace Secretary, Chief Joseph Ugwuanyi, the traditional ruler called on parents, community leaders and young people to support initiatives aimed at reducing substance abuse in society.

“The fight against drug abuse requires collective responsibility. Parents, traditional institutions, community leaders and youths must work together to safeguard the future of our young people and ensure safer communities,” he said.
