69 killed, 246 injured in Lagos road accidents in Q1 2026 — LASTMA

No fewer than 69 people lost their lives in road accidents across Lagos State in the first quarter of 2026, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has said.

The agency disclosed that an additional 246 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries within the same period, underscoring persistent safety challenges on the state’s busy road network.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the figures known on Sunday during an interview with journalists in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said the authority responded to over 600 accident scenes between January and March, while also resolving more than 900 traffic violations involving trucks and other articulated vehicles. He added that the agency carried out about 4,900 physical enforcement operations during the period.

According to him, technology-driven monitoring systems also played a significant role in traffic enforcement, with 17,942 offences recorded through the use of Traffic Management Solutions devices.

He reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations, noting that impounded vehicles are promptly prosecuted at the Lagos State Mobile Court.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA had intensified efforts to improve traffic flow and emergency response times, including the strategic repositioning of recovery vehicles and the overhaul of traffic management equipment.

He further disclosed that the agency had prioritised personnel development, commencing a comprehensive training and reorientation programme aimed at enhancing service delivery.

“We have developed a year-long training calendar from January to December 2026 and plan to train over 1,000 personnel through both internal and external programmes,” he said.

The LASTMA boss added that consultants had been engaged to support specialised training, with more high-level capacity-building initiatives to be rolled out in the coming months.
