Enugu Police Dismiss Viral Allegations of Unlawful Detention, Killing

 

The Enugu State Police Command has rejected claims circulating in a viral video alleging unlawful detention and the killing of suspects within its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, describing the content as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said the claims were unverified and appeared intended to misinform the public and undermine confidence in the police.

The Command said preliminary findings found no evidence to support the allegations, maintaining that all individuals in custody are treated in accordance with the law and with due respect for their fundamental human rights.

It added that there is no record of extrajudicial killings or unlawful detention within any of its units, contrary to what was portrayed in the video.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, urged residents to disregard the footage and avoid sharing unverified information capable of inciting fear or eroding public trust. He advised the public to rely on official police communication channels for accurate and credible updates.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, assuring residents of its continued efforts to protect lives and property across the state.
