Enugu Police to Launch Special Violent Crime Unit

The Enugu State Police Command says it is set to launch a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at strengthening efforts to tackle serious offences across the state.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command said the unit, established on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, will focus on investigating and responding to crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent offences.

According to the police, the unit will rely on intelligence-led operations and is expected to operate in line with the Nigerian Constitution, the Nigeria Police Act 2020 and international human rights standards.

The former Crack Tactical Squad base at Golf Estate, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, has been designated as the operational headquarters of the unit. CSP Henry Imo has been appointed as commander, while ASP Godwins Ebuka Ebenezer will serve as the unit’s media liaison officer.

The Command said officers selected for the unit have undergone training in human rights, as well as social and emotional intelligence, to improve professionalism and engagement with the public.

A complaints desk has also been established, with a dedicated phone line provided for residents to report misconduct by officers.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, urged personnel to adhere strictly to operational guidelines and respect citizens’ rights.

He reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to tackling violent crime and called for continued public cooperation.
