Iran says Strait of Hormuz closed until US lifts blockade, ships report attacks

Iran says it is closing the Strait of Hormuz until the United States ends what it calls a naval blockade on Iranian ports, sharply escalating tensions in one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said the closure follows what it described as a US “breach of the ceasefire.” It warned that any vessels attempting to enter the strait “will be targeted.”

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital chokepoint for global energy shipments had briefly reopened on Friday before Iran reversed course, tying access to the lifting of US restrictions.

US President Donald Trump said American forces would maintain their naval posture, insisting the blockade would remain until a broader deal with Iran is “100% complete.” 

He accused Tehran of trying to “blackmail” the United States.

Tensions are rising at sea. The UK Maritime Trade Operations said both a tanker and a container ship reported coming under attack near the strait.

The incidents add to growing concern over maritime security in the region, as shipping traffic continues to face disruption amid escalating confrontation between Tehran and Washington.
