Mothering Sunday: Priest Urges Women to Uphold Values, Strengthen Families

 

A Catholic priest in Enugu has called on mothers to embody strong moral character and leadership within the family, describing their role as central to the stability of society.

The Parish Priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ologo, Rev. Fr. Joseph Ozor, made the appeal on Sunday during the 2026 Mothering Sunday celebration themed “True Love in Action.” 

He urged women to serve as role models by upholding values that promote unity, discipline, and sound moral upbringing in their homes.

In his homily, Ozor expressed concern over what he termed a growing “modern wife syndrome,” which he said reflects a shift away from traditional family responsibilities among some women. 

He cautioned against lifestyles he described as inconsistent with the dignity of motherhood, including excessive social engagements and neglect of domestic responsibilities.

The cleric emphasised what he referred to as the “three powers” of a wife, effective communication, nurturing care through provision, and marital intimacy as essential pillars for sustaining harmony in the home.

He further advised women to remain committed to their marital vows and avoid behaviours capable of undermining family unity. 

Addressing family dynamics, Ozor urged wives to maintain respectful relationships with their in-laws, particularly mothers-in-law, while also encouraging older women to give younger couples the space to manage their homes independently.

The priest called on mothers to reflect deeply on their responsibilities and demonstrate love through practical actions. 

He stressed that the strength and cohesion of society are closely tied to the health and stability of the family unit.
