Police in Nasarawa State have detained a 37-year-old pastor over allegations of defiling a minor, authorities said on Sunday.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ramhan Nansel, disclosed this in a statement issued in Lafia, noting that the suspect was arrested by operatives of the Karshi Divisional Headquarters following a formal complaint lodged on April 18, 2026.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly misled the victim’s aunt by claiming the 16-year-old girl was under spiritual attack and required cleansing at a river. Instead, he reportedly took her to a hotel in New Karshi, where the offence was said to have occurred. He was also alleged to have threatened the victim to prevent disclosure.
The case came to light after the victim’s guardian noticed behavioural changes and raised concerns, prompting further inquiry and medical evaluation.
Nansel stated that the suspect has been taken into custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. He added that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, has directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation and possible prosecution.
The police assured the public of their commitment to ensuring justice, while urging residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution in their interactions with individuals claiming religious authority.
