Peter Obi condemns alleged killing in Delta, calls for police reform

Peter Obi, a leading figure in Nigeria’s opposition and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a young man in Effurun, Delta State, describing it as a serious violation of the rule of law.

In a statement posted on social media, Mr Obi criticised reports that the victim was shot by a police officer, saying no individual should be deprived of life without due process and a fair determination of guilt.

He said such incidents deepen public anxiety and cause lasting trauma for victims’ families, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are already grappling with insecurity and violence.

Mr Obi, however, welcomed what he described as a swift response from the police authorities, expressing hope that the case would be handled transparently and brought to a proper conclusion.

He also called for reforms within law enforcement agencies, including stricter recruitment standards, arguing that only individuals with sound judgement should be entrusted with firearms.

Mr Obi added that accountability and respect for the rule of law are essential to rebuilding public trust and ensuring a safer society.
