Police detain man over alleged fake currency trade in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has detained a 62-year-old man over alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit currency in the state.

Police spokesperson, SP Rahman Nansel, said in a statement on Saturday in Lafia that the suspect, identified as Mamuda Hassan from Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

He said the arrest followed credible intelligence, adding that the suspect was apprehended at the Lafia cattle market while allegedly trading fake ₦1,000 notes.

According to him, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect confessed during interrogation that the counterfeit notes were supplied by an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia.

Efforts, he added, were ongoing to track and arrest the alleged accomplice, who remains at large.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Mohammed, urged members of the public to remain vigilant during financial transactions.

He advised traders, fuel station attendants, POS operators and transport workers to watch out for counterfeit notes, noting indicators such as poor print quality, duplicated serial numbers, and missing security features.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
