Police recover explosives in custodial centre

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom State says it has recovered explosive materials and other suspected tools within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, in what it described as a swift operation that averted a potential security breach.

In a statement issued in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, said the discovery followed credible intelligence from correctional officials who reported suspicious items around the facility.

According to the police, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, alongside tactical teams from BomPol Base 38 in Uyo, to secure the area and conduct a thorough sweep.

During the operation, officers recovered two 90mm high-explosive rounds, a 45cm burning fuse, and several tools, including a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a 6cm iron conduit pipe.

The police said the EOD team safely neutralised the explosive devices, preventing what could have led to loss of lives or damage to critical infrastructure within the custodial centre.

Following the incident, security has been strengthened around the facility, with enhanced surveillance, tighter access control, and increased patrols in surrounding areas.

DSP John said investigations had commenced to determine how the materials got into the facility and to identify those responsible.

She assured residents that the situation was under control and that no casualties were recorded.

The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity, warning that the command would not tolerate threats to public safety or attacks on critical institutions.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
