US envoys head to Pakistan for Iran talks as Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire strains

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump, are due in Islamabad on Saturday for talks related to Iran, the White House has said.

Iran has confirmed that its foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, will also travel to the Pakistani capital, but has not said whether he will meet US officials.

Earlier, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran had an opportunity to “make a good, wise deal”, adding that a US naval blockade of Iranian ports was expanding.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah have accused each other of breaching a ceasefire. The development comes after Donald Trump announced a three-week extension to the Israel-Lebanon truce.

In Beirut, residents say they remain cautious despite hopes for peace, with some unwilling to return home amid uncertainty over how long the ceasefire will hold.
