US seizes Iranian cargo ship after Trump says it tried to breach naval blockade

 

The United States has seized an Iranian cargo vessel it says was attempting to breach a blockade of Iran’s ports, according to President Donald Trump.

Mr Trump said the ship was repeatedly warned to stop but the crew “refused to listen,” adding that US naval forces disabled the vessel, including by striking its engine room.

Audio reportedly broadcast during the operation captured a warning ordering those on board to evacuate the engine room, as US forces said they were prepared to use disabling fire.

Iran has condemned the incident and vowed retaliation. Iranian state media has also reported drone attacks targeting US vessels, though there have been no confirmed reports of damage.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing in parallel, with a US delegation led by Vice-President JD Vance expected to travel for talks. However, it remains unclear whether Iranian officials will take part. A spokesperson in Tehran said there are currently “no plans for the next round of negotiations” and no final decision has been made.

A two-week ceasefire between the two sides is due to expire on Wednesday. Analysts say the chances of a breakthrough in talks remain limited.
