2027: NLC, TUC back Hamzat’s governorship bid

The Lagos State councils of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria TUC, have endorsed the governorship ambition of the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 elections.

The endorsement, announced during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, adds to a growing list of political and institutional backing for Hamzat within the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.

Labour leaders expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership capacity, describing him as competent and reliable, while pledging to mobilise support for his candidacy in the forthcoming poll.

The endorsement follows earlier backing from key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu, the party’s Governance Advisory Council, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Other party figures, including the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, and APC chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, have also thrown their weight behind the deputy governor.

In her remarks, the Lagos NLC chairperson, Comrade Funmi Sessi, commended the state government’s engagement with workers but called for improved welfare, citing the impact of rising inflation on living standards. She advocated an upward review of the minimum wage to reflect prevailing economic realities in the state.

Responding, Hamzat expressed appreciation for the endorsement, assuring workers and residents of his commitment to sustaining and improving Lagos State’s development trajectory.

“We will not let you down. The developmental strides of Lagos will be consolidated and advanced,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to dialogue with labour unions, noting that constructive engagement remains central to governance in the state.

Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, has positioned his experience in public service as a key asset, expressing confidence that it has prepared him for the demands of higher office.
