Anya-Ndi-Igbo Celebrates Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe, at 85
A socio-political and economic development group, Anya-Ndi-Igbo, has congratulated the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, on the occasion of his 85th birthday, describing him as a monarch whose reign has brought dignity, cultural renaissance, and purposeful leadership to both the Onitsha Kingdom and the wider Nigerian society.
In a statement issued by the President of the group, Chris Okoye, the organisation said the monarch, who clocked 85 on May 14, 2026, has remained a symbol of excellence, wisdom, and service more than two decades after ascending the throne as the 21st Obi of Onitsha.
The group noted that Igwe Achebe’s emergence as monarch in 2002 followed an accomplished corporate career in the Royal Dutch Shell Group, where he served in various leadership capacities across the multinational organisation.
According to the statement, the monarch has since “come to embody royalty in its truest essence,” redefining traditional leadership through discipline, humility, intellect, and commitment to humanity.
“Being mentally alert and physically fit at 85 is itself an extraordinary blessing from God. But even more significant is that, in blessing him, God also blessed Onitsha Kingdom, Anambra State, Alaigbo and indeed Nigeria,” the statement read.
Anya-Ndi-Igbo further praised the traditional ruler for elevating the cultural identity of the Igbo people on the global stage, particularly through the annual Ofala Festival, which it said has grown from a local traditional event into an internationally recognised cultural celebration.
“It is his sense of traditional pride and the ease with which he blends the culture of his people with contemporary style that has catapulted the Ofala Festival onto the global calendar of cultural festivals,” the statement added.
The group also commended the monarch’s contributions to national development, noting that he has continued to serve Nigeria in different capacities on social, cultural, and economic matters, both locally and internationally.
According to the organisation, one of the defining features of the monarch’s reign has been his commitment to education and human capital development. It recalled that early in his reign, the Obi established a manpower development trust fund aimed at supporting access to education within his community.
The group said the initiative reflected the monarch’s belief that financial limitations should never deprive children of quality education, adding that his worldview was shaped by his academic exposure at globally respected institutions, including Stanford University and Columbia University.
Describing the monarch as “the people’s monarch,” the organisation prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for the revered traditional ruler as he advances gracefully into the next phase of his life.
