Bishop Onaga Urges Faith, Discipline During ESUT Pastoral Visit

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Valentine Chukwuma Onaga, has urged staff and students of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, to embrace sacrifice, diligence and strong faith, warning against distractions such as the misuse of Artificial Intelligence which he said undermines creativity and originality.

Bishop Onaga delivered the message during a Holy Mass held at the Chapel of Perpetual Adoration within ESUT, Agbani, as part of his first pastoral visit to the institution. 

The visit also featured the blessing of the chapel and the site of a proposed chaplaincy complex, as well as the confirmation of 232 candidates.

He urged members of the university community, including students, lecturers and staff, to remain focused on academic excellence and to make effective use of the chapel for spiritual strength, especially in moments of difficulty. 

He also called for deeper commitment to faith and moral discipline within the institution.

During the Mass, the Bishop administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 232 candidates and offered prayers for peace, growth and development in the university and the country at large.

The visit, hosted by St. Albert the Great Catholic Chaplaincy, was attended by university management, staff, students and members of the Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students. Bishop Onaga was received by the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Valentine Ifeanyi Ozonoh, and later paid a courtesy visit to Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie.

The Vice-Chancellor described the visit as historic, noting it was the first pastoral visit by a Catholic Bishop to ESUT. He called for a fully functional chaplaincy centre to support daily worship and evangelisation within the university.

The Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Ozonoh, expressed gratitude to the Bishop for his fatherly support and commended members of the Catholic community and benefactors for their contributions toward the chapel project and the success of the pastoral visit.
