Chapel Desecration: Owerri Archdiocese Orders Week-Long Reparation Prayers

The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri has announced a week-long programme of reparation prayers following what it described as the desecration of the Chapel of Adoration at St. Mulumba Parish, Owerri, after unidentified individuals allegedly broke in and stole a monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament.

In a statement issued on April 30, 2026, and signed by the Archdiocesan Chancellor and Secretary, Rev. Fr. Patrick C. Mbarah, the Church said the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 29, during heavy rainfall in the city.

According to the statement, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Raymond Madu, reported that the intruders forced their way into the chapel by removing part of the roof, gaining access through the ceiling into the Adoration Chapel. The attackers were said to have taken away the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament, an object of deep reverence in Catholic worship.

The Archdiocese described the act as a “reckless irreverence” and a serious violation of sacred space.

In response, the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, directed all faithful of St. Mulumba Parish to embark on a structured programme of reparation prayers. The exercise is scheduled to run from May 1 to May 8, 2026, daily between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Church authorities said the prayers are intended as both spiritual reparation and a call for renewed reverence for the Blessed Sacrament.

The Archdiocese also used the opportunity to remind priests and parish administrators of existing guidelines governing Eucharistic adoration. It stressed that the Blessed Sacrament must never be left unattended during exposition and that such devotion should only take place when a sufficient number of the faithful are present.

The statement urged strict compliance with canonical norms designed to safeguard the Eucharist, describing them as essential to preventing similar incidents.

The alleged break-in has generated concern among members of the Catholic community in Owerri, with Church leaders calling for increased vigilance and stronger protection of places of worship.
