The Ebonyi State Government has lifted the curfew imposed on Amasiri community in Afikpo Local Government Area following months of tension linked to a deadly communal crisis.

The curfew, introduced earlier in the year after the killing of four persons in neighbouring Okporojo community in Edda Local Government Area, was lifted after a security review meeting at Government House, Abakaliki.

Speaking after the meeting, the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr Ben Odoh, said the decision followed appeals and renewed commitment to peace by stakeholders in the affected communities.

He explained that the move was influenced by letters of remorse from Amasiri leaders, which were accepted by the Okporojo community through their traditional institutions.

Odoh added that the government also rejected a proposal seeking to delist Amasiri Development Centre, citing interventions by elders and stakeholders across the state.

The Ebonyi State Government said security agencies would maintain a presence in the area to sustain peace.

Also speaking, the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Hope Okafor, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Tarzan Tsav, said investigations into recent killings in the state had been concluded, with suspects to be charged to court.

She added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects still at large, while fresh investigations have commenced into the killing of a traditional ruler in Ishinkwo community.

Authorities say normal activities are expected to resume gradually as calm returns to the area.
