Enugu tricycle riders rally in support of Governor Mbah’s re-election

Thousands of tricycle operators in Enugu State have held a large rally in support of Governor Peter Mbah, endorsing him for a second term ahead of the 2027 elections.

The riders, popularly known as “Keke” operators, moved in convoys across major parts of Enugu metropolis on Monday, converging at Okpara Square. Many decorated their tricycles with stickers and images of the governor as they passed through routes including Abakpa, Emene, Agbani Road, Ogui Road, New Haven and Zik Avenue.

Speaking to reporters during the rally, the chairman of the association, Kingsley Edeh, said members were backing the governor because of what he described as improvements in road infrastructure and security under the current administration.

He said better road conditions had reduced maintenance costs for operators, allowing them to retain more of their earnings.

“We have seen changes in the roads and the general environment for doing business,” he said. “Our daily expenses on repairs have reduced, and that has made a difference to our livelihoods.”

Mr Edeh also pointed to ongoing projects in the state, including schools, healthcare centres and conference facilities, which he said were contributing to economic activity.

The group dismissed claims that tricycle operators are being overtaxed, saying recent reforms to revenue collection — including a shift to digital payments — had improved transparency and reduced conflict within the system.

“We now pay through formal channels, and that has brought more order and accountability,” he said.
